Farewell

Had hwa ro today with friends!
A lot of people are moving away to different places:
Eileen going to Sydney,
Ka-Seng going to San Francisco
Emma going (back) to Taipei, and
Tricia going (back again) to Tokyo!

We surely are growing up and going places but when I was young I had never imagined that this would be such a common thing !

As Eileen said, 'good luck to everyone' and I wish everyone the best on all their journeys!

Democracy

Riley also notes that in contrast, fascists denounced liberal democracy for not being a true democracy but in fact being un-democratic because from the fascist perspective, elections and parliaments are unable to represent the interests of the nation because it lumps together individuals who have little in common into geographical districts to vote for an array of parties to represent them that results in little unanimity in terms of interests, projects, or intentions, and that liberal democracy's multi-party elections merely serve as a means to legitimize elite rule without addressing the interests of the general will of the nation.

Envelopes

Places that sell gift cards without accompanying envelopes shouldn't sell gift cards!

The fact that it's a gift card is bad enough they can't even provide a nice way to present it :(

Croce

All history is 'contemporary history', declared Croce,^ meaning that history consists essentially in seeing the past through the eyes of the present and in the light of its problems, and that the main work of the historian is not to record , but to evaluate; for, if he does not evaluate, how can he know what is worth recording?

^: The context of this celebrated aphorism is as follows: 'The practical requirements which underlie every historical judgement give to all history the character of "contemporary history", because, however remote in time events thus recounted may seem to be, the history in reality refers to present needs and present situations wherein those events vibrate' (B. Croce, History as the Story of Liberty, Engl. transl. 1941, p. 19).
